I’m Poh, and I understand. For over 17 years, I stood on the frontlines of mental health and disability, a therapist wholeheartedly committed to my calling. I loved the work, thrived on the challenge, and poured my entire being into it. (Perhaps a little too much, looking back, as I unknowingly compensated for my own neurological differences with unrelenting perfectionism.)
Then, life shifted. Becoming a parent, the relentless caseloads, the constant exposure to stress and trauma – it became a perfect storm. My chronic health issues (PCOS, iron deficiency) flared, and then, the unthinkable: losing both my beloved parents within two years. Grief, exhaustion, and a frantic attempt to control an ever-growing to-do list pushed me to the brink.
I stopped meditating. I neglected myself. As an Asian-Australian woman, I was raised with a deep-seated belief: look after others, sacrifice for family harmony. This beautiful, yet sometimes crushing, cultural expectation only deepened my struggle. I was losing myself, becoming emotionally unavailable even to those I loved most.
